Spreading Larkspur
Delphinium patens
1998
Butterflies are not effective pollinators of Delphinium. Bumble bees are attracted to the color of these flowers. They land, grab the sepals, and stick their heads into the upper petals to slurp the nectar. The hairs help them hang on. The dark-green line of the anthers is where they join together and are attached to the filament. The light green crease is where they will later split open lengthwise exposing the pollen.
