Corn Lily
Veratrum fimbriatum
2003
The white color of this blossom on the dark forest floor makes it visible to its pollinators from a distance. As they approach, the ring of yellow is the bull's-eye that guides them to the nectar. Since it blooms in October when most other plants have already set seed, it has most of the pollinators to itself. It is endemic to Sonoma and Mendocino counties and its alkaloids are toxic.
