Suisun Marsh Aster
Aster lentus
1999

In the Sunflower Family, groups of tiny flowers aggregate on a receptacle to form a head that appears to be a single flower. Here there are many blue flowers and many yellow flowers as well. The stamens of each flower unite to form a tube through which the stigma of that flower emerges to present for pollination. Dandelions, which are also in this family, are a testament to how well this system works. This is an endangered flower of the Suisun Marsh where its habitat is threatened.
