Salal
Gaultheria shallon
1998

The shiny, sticky tip of the stigma is receptive to pollen but exertion from the little urn makes self-pollination unlikely. This common plant of the coastal Redwood belt was first collected by Meriwether Lewis. White is the color most easily seen by pollinators in the dim light of the foggy woodland. The hanging urn shape is important in keeping the pollen dry.
