Blazing Star
Mentzelia lindleyi
1998
Lester Rowntree, the honorary president of the California Native Plant Society, photographed by Imogene Cunningham when she was almost 100 years old, said of the blazing star, "...(the) fairy-like multitude of long stamens takes on an unearthly beauty." I agree and I call it the 4th of July Celebration. When I met Lester Rowntree, she was 98 yrs. old and regretted following her doctors orders to stay out of the mountains for health reasons. She wished she had continued to camp in her beloved mountains because she would rather have died there young than been here old, a burden to her family: the thoughts of a once young woman who used to swim daily in the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean off Carmel Highlands. Look for loose rock and great heat where you find Mentzelia.
