Spindle Locoweed
Astragalus oophorus
1999

This genus has 94 species in California, 66 of which are listed as being rare to some degree. This one is from dry, open areas in the White Mountains and other desert ranges. Its maroon mottled pod protects the maturing seeds and gives the family its name. "Astragalus," Greek for dice, describes the rattling of the mature seeds in the bladdery fruit.
