Mariposa-Lily
Calochortus supurbus
1998
Mariposa-lilies vary in color but are generally white, sometimes yellow or pink. The three-part arrangement of floral parts, apparent here in the stigma, is a characteristic of the lily family. Calochortus is a Greek word meaning beautiful grass. It refers to the long, narrow leaves which look like small clumps of grass. These flowers need to have drought in the summertime so that their bulbs do not rot. Fortunately this occurs in many areas of California and this is why they are widespread.
