Refugio Manzanita
Arctostaphylos refugioensis
1999

This flower is waiting to be pollinated. Later, when the poricidal anthers open, the mature pollen will be disbursed to other flowers pollinating them. Because Arctostaphylos hang upside down, the pollen, protected from the rain, empties out easily when the flower is jostled. The entire range of this manzanita is two miles long and just over one mile wide. It is a rare plant of sandstone outcrops in the Santa Ynez Mountains. The large size of the berries and the beauty of the new spring foliage make it attractive even when its white or pale-pink blossoms are gone.
