Penstemon
Penstemon heterophyllus
1999

Penstemon is largely a California genus which has 5 stamens. Here you see two of them, each measuring just 2.5 mm. The spiny hairs comb pollen off of visiting pollinators. Penstemon flowers double as bee shelters during cold or wet spells, with the flowers' cozy confines leaving only the bees' fuzzy rumps exposed to the chill.
